As this years summer heat wave falls upon us,it is important to ensure that we are staying hydrated. Many of us on a daily basis will walk around dehydrated, not understanding that feeling of somewhat hunger we are experiencing even though it has not been long since our afternoon snack. Why does this happen? Dehydration, which at times can come across as hunger can be to blame.
According the the Center of Disease and Control we need water in our everyday lives and not just 8 oz of water. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is: About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women. This is not a surprise seeing as 60% of our bodies are made up of water and water is lost daily through breathing, sweating and other normal body processes.
How than, do we ensure that we are drinking enough water on a daily basis? Having a water bottle on hand is one way and taking sips throughout the day. I always find it helpful to use water bottles to make sure I am reaching my daily water goals.
When you are choosing your beverage of choice for the day opt for unsweetened options such as unsweetened iced tea and water infused with fruit. Swapping out the water for soda can save an average of 150 calories! Aside from drinking your fluids during the day it is also a good idea to choose items in your diet that are made up of water. Choosing fruits such as apples, grapes, oranges and pears can help you reach your daily water goals. For those caffeine lovers I am happy to reports that your morning cup of joe does count!
During this week’s heat wave make sure you drink up and avoid dehydration and before reaching for your nighttime snack make sure that thirst isn’t the real issue.
