Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS affects between 25 and 45 million people in the United States (10-15% of the population). About 2 in 3 IBS sufferers are female. IBS is a group of symptoms including pain or discomfort in your abdomen, and changes in bowel patterns. It is a functional gut disorder which means that your gastrointestinal tract behaves in an abnormal way without evidence of damage due to the disease.
We at Digestive Disease Center see IBS as a disease that requires support. April is IBS awareness month and a great time to discuss a new support group that we will be launching. We are forming an IBS support group starting June 7th at MidHudson Regional Hospital Conf Room A @530pm. Our mission is to offer support for those of you who are diagnosed with IBS and to provide you with up to date science based information as well as support from others going through this life altering disease.
I will be leading this group and providing you with new information on this disease and shedding light on new ideas.
